Why Landmark Status?
The landmarking process will provide one more tool to successfully preserve the building and ensure the resources exist to continue the operational excellence of the Center. Successfully landmarking the building will make targeted improvements possible, including renovated lobbies and common areas, a new HVAC system, rehabilitation of the historic façade, windows, and upgraded landscaping and improved sidewalks and access. These upgrades will enhance the best in class reputation of the Design Center, while continuing to improve quality of life for tenants.
- Landmarking means the Design Center can never be converted to condos or formula retail, and the historic qualities will be preserved for posterity.
- Office uses will remain limited to the top two floors if landmark status is implemented and allow the Design Center to seek compatible tenants beyond the existing PDR zoning.
- The remaining floor-by-floor uses will be made permanent.
What Happens Next?
The process moving forward is not immediate. There is a long backlog for office space in the city’s available pool, meaning this conversion is likely years in the making.
